The World Bank (WB) will provide Rwf 45billion for the rehabilitation of Kigali-Ruhengeri road. This was revealed yesterday by the Minister of Infrastructure, Linda Bihire

Works to renovate and upgrade the 83 kilometre road is expected to kick off in November.

"Tenders for the road rehabilitation and upgrade have been open,” said Bihire.

The development comes at a time the World Bank President, Robert B. Zoellick, is in the country to assess the progress of several projects funded by the bank.

After construction, the new road will have a seven- metre lane capable of allowing two heavy load trucks to pass each other with ease.

The Kigali-Ruhengeri road forms part of the international corridor leading from the ports of Dar-es-Salaam and Mombasa to Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

"We are currently on the evaluation process level. We have already completed the tendering process and are waiting for the World Bank’s approval which will later be followed by the construction contract negotiation,” said the minister.

Kigali-Ruhengeri-Gisenyi road has the highest traffic in the country, with close to 1500 vehicles using it daily. Most of the vehicles using the road are heavy commercial vehicles.
Once complete, the new road would have sidewalks for pedestrians.
