Dean remains admitted after motor accident

HUYE – Dons at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) are faced with a transport problem because they do not benefit from government assistance to acquire cars.

According to the National University of Rwanda Rector Professor Silas Lwakabamba, only the top three university officials benefit from this scheme.

"It is only the Rector and the two Vice Rectors who are entitled to government assistance to get transport,” said Lwakabamba.

"Another category is that of administrative directors who have been assisted to purchase cars duty free. In addition the officers are given fuel allowances to facilitate their work.

But the unfortunate part is that our academic deans and directors, and senior professors do not have this facility,” he added.

In a rather unfortunate incident four weeks ago, the dean of the Faculty of Law was involved in a Motorcycle accident in Kigali.

Dr Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, the only LLB PhD holder at the university has been immobilised as a result of the accident and is still admitted at the King Faisal Hospital in Kigali.

"A dean of the faculty of management manages 3,000 students and over 100 staff members, he has to travel and in most cases the officer uses public transport.

We are discussing with government to see how they can be assisted, partly as a motivating scheme for them,” Lwakabamba said.
