KARONGI- Police in Karongi District are hunting for a Congolese refugee from Kiziba refugee camp, who allegedly attempted to sneak a gun into the camp.

Alex Harerimana was suspected to be carrying illicit drugs when he was stopped by security officials. After reportedly putting  down the bag for inspection sources say that the suspect took to his heels and later on police found a gun hidden in the bag..

"Harerimana tricked the team that intercepted him into thinking that he was innocent by acting humbly before he took off when they nearly nabbed him,” an eye witness told this reporter.

The gun is under police custody  at Bwishyura Police Station in Karongi.

A security official who did not want to reveal his name said the gun was a Sub-Machine Gun which is not registered nor is it attached to any security organ in the country.

"The gun’s source is completely unknown to us and we have not yet established where it could have come from. But we suspect it was trafficked from DR Congo or any other neighboring country,” the source said.

A special police unit charged with the fight against trafficking of fire arms has been established to avoid such crimes in the country.
