Resurfacing of roads in Gitarama

MUHANGA- A Chinese Company (RB) has been contracted to upgrade several roads in Gitarama town, which have for long been in poor state. The work will also involve paving some roads in the town centre.

Residents many of whom have acquired casual jobs and local leaders, in Muhanga District who talked to our reporter, have lauded the government for its efforts to upgrade the roads, saying it will boost business.

Abedi Ruzigana the vice Mayor in-charge of Economic Affairs, said on Wednesday that; "the roads will give a new facelift, improve hygiene, drainage and speed up activities of the business community in the district.”

Ruzigana explained that the construction started after the district made a formal request to the Ministry of Infrastructure, to include Gitarama town on the proposed Butare-Kigali road completion project.

Various motorists who talked to this reporter said movement has been made easier, and expect to make more money and incur less costs on mechanical problems caused by potholes.
Other residents however, raised fears over high speed which they say increases the number of accidents.

"This is timely and we are grateful that roads have been expanded and paved to accommodate both motorists and the increasing number of pedestrians to have easy access in the town centre,” one resident said.

Earlier, David Dushimimana, the district lands officer, said the roads would be named after the construction is finished.
