Heavy shelling from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday, January 27, caused widespread destruction in Rubavu town, damaging homes, schools, and businesses.

The incident occurred amid escalating clashes between the M23 armed group and the Congolese army (FARDC) and its allies. Stray bullets and bombs from the fighting in Goma, DR Congo, struck Rwandan territory, leaving a trail of destruction and casualties.

The New Times visited border areas to assess the aftermath of the shelling. Significant damage was observed in Mbugangari, Petite Barrière, Buhuru, and other parts of Rubavu near Goma. Windows, doors, roofs, and other infrastructure bore the brunt of the bombardment.

According to Alain Mukuralinda, Rwanda’s Deputy Government Spokesperson, the shelling claimed the lives of at least five people and injured 35 others. Additionally, nine houses were completely destroyed.

"The indiscriminate attacks highlight the persistent insecurity caused by armed groups operating in eastern DR Congo and the inability of Congolese forces to control their territory,” Mukuralinda noted.

Local residents expressed fear and uncertainty, with many forced to flee their homes in search of safety. Schools and businesses in affected areas remain closed as authorities assess the damage and coordinated emergency responses.
