KARONGI -  A prominent businessman in Karongi District has been detained after a Gacaca court issued an arrest warrant against him.

Afrodise Mugambira, 51, the owner of Hotel Golf Eden, a major tourist attraction in the western region, is accused of having played a role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Mugambira, who owns many other booming businesses in Kibuye town, was rounded up last week for fears that he might flee to evade justice.

He is currently detained at Gitarama prison following his transfer from Bwishyura Police Station, where he had spent three days after his arrest.

"He has his passport and Gacaca was not sure that he could stay in the country given his past history. So they issued an arrest warrant and requested the police to implement it,” our police source told this reporter.

In response Mugambira however, claimed that his arrest was politically motivated.

Last month, the restaurant section at Hotel Golf was closed down by district officials over poor hygiene.

This is not the first time he has been arrested. Previously, Mugambira had served a nine year jail sentence after being convicted of Genocide charges.
