Murigande addresses students

The Minister of Education Charles Murigande, on Sunday urged 150 students who study abroad to be ambassadors of Rwanda to the different countries where they study.

Speaking at the closing ceremony in Gako in Bugesera district, Murigande told students that Rwanda lacks ambassadors in some countries, arguing them to become representatives of Rwanda.

Hospitality industry gets committee

The Rwanda Hotel and Restaurant Association held a general assembly last week, at Alpha Palace Hotel to elect new management.

In his opening remarks the President of the Chamber of Tourism, Mr. Emmanuel Rusera noted that although the Association had accomplished a number of achievements and that time had come to elect new leadership.

He thanked the outgoing committee, giving special thanks to the President, Augustin Mukenzangabo, for his tireless contribution to the Association during his tenure.

JICA helps MINAGRI

The Japan international Cooperation Agency (JICA) is helping the ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) in the study on sustainable rural and agricultural development in Bugesera district, Eastern Province.

According to the ministry, it has studied that the district has abundant water resources of its lakes and rivers, land resources like untapped marshlands, thus it is endowed with a high potentiality of development and available resources, though agricultural techniques remain at a low level.

The area has suffered from grave food shortage with a low line of food security, 52.8% in 2001, by far lower than the level of the national average 41.6%, owing to degradation of arable land by soil erosion and frequent drought in the hills.

Tobacco deaths on increase

A survey done by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that tobacco related deaths may account for the death of 10 million people in the developing countries by the year 2020.

WHO statistics indicate that the total number of smokers worldwide is 1.3 billion and tobacco relating deaths every year are estimated at 5 Million.

Teachers trained

At least 18 teachers coming from different schools offering agriculture countrywide underwent a practical training in flowers and ornamental trees cultivation, from July 27 to 31.

The training took place on field in the greenhouses of "Rwanda Flora Farm”, located in Nyacyonga in Nyarugenge and got hands-on training at the farm which they were encouraged to pass on to students in their respective students.

Take reconciliation to the diaspora

Dr Jean Baptist Habyarimana, president of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission told students that they should spread the reconciliation message to Rwandans living in the Diaspora.

He said this at the close of a one month solidarity camp of students studying from abroad in Bugesera district.
