ONCE beaten, twice shy! Atraco will have this phrase at the back of their mind when they take on Mukura in the final of the MTN Peace Cup this afternoon at Amahoro Stadium.
And if the mood in yesterday’s training session at Kicukiro is anything to go by, then Atraco fans should be braced for a thrilling performance from their team.
APR snatched the national league title from Atraco’s grip on the final day of the campaign. Atraco headed into the final day with a two-point cushion over APR but the latter’s 2-0 victory over Mukura coupled with the taxi-men’s goalless draw against Marines was enough to swing the trophy back in APR’s hands.
However, Atraco’s head coach Sam Timbe claims that the team has moved on and is ready for today’s challenge.
"On Thursday, we were short in all departments but we hope to put things right tomorrow (today),” the Ugandan tactician said.
His assistant Emmanuel Ruremesha supplemented, "We have no option but to win the MTN Peace Cup if we are to compete in next year’s Confederation Cup.”
Apart from Atraco’s central defender Amani Uwiringiyimana who is suspended, Timbe is expected to field a strong side this afternoon.
Atraco have a lot to put right. On top of Thursday’s disappointment, the club is also eager to finally lay their hands on the Peace Cup trophy after a second-rate display in last year’s final. Atraco suffered a humiliating 1-4 defeat against APR.
Mukura on the other hand have other ideas. After dislodging SC Kiyovu in the quarter-final and Rayon Sport in the semi-final, the Huye based club is pumped up.
The three-time champions (1986, 1990 and 1992) believe Ali Bizimungu can help them end their 17-year drought.
The final will be preceded by a third-place playoff contest between 2008 Peace Cup champions APR and six-time winners Rayon Sport.
On top of earning a ticket to next year’s Confederation Cup, today’s winner will also pocket a whooping Rwf10million. The second, third and fourth teams will bag Rwf7m, Rwf4m and Rwf2.5m respectively.
