THE race for this year’s national league title will be decided on the final day after  reigning champions Atraco and nine-time league champions APR recorded vital victories over Mukura and Electrogaz yesterday.

Table leaders Atraco defeated Mukura 2-1 away in Huye to maintain their hopes of retaining this year’s league title.
On-form Hamis Kitagenda opened the scoring Sam Timbe’s side, converting a well-timed pass from skipper Jean Shyaka on 34th minute of the game.

The champions went into recess leading but Mukura grabbed an equalizer through Yumba Saidi’s penalty after Rodriquez Murengezi was fouled in the penalty area.

Former APR striker Andre Lomami scored an 80th minute winner for Atraco after capitalizing from another set-piece created by Shyaka to earn a crucial victory for the 2009 Cecafa/Kagame Cup winners.

Kitagenda has now scored three goals in two league successive matches since returning from guiding Atraco to the regional club championship title a fortnight ago. In Sudan he scored four goals and went on to grab a brace over the weekend as Atraco beat Rayon 2-1 in the first leg of the semi-finals of the MTN Peace Cup.

The Uganda Cranes international has amassed 12 league goals scored this season, two goals shy of the top scorer and teammate Jean Lomami.

APR also grabbed a justified 2-0 win over Electrogaz to keep pressure on Atraco thus forcing the race for the league title to the final day of the season.

Kabange Twite and Labama Bokota scored goals for Erik Paske’s outfit. APR would have increased their goal tally but Electrogaz goalie was in inspired form, making vital saves from Haruna Niyonzima, Bokota, Kabange and Djabir Mutarambirwa.

APR maintain the second spot on the league standings with 48 points, two points behind leaders Atraco.

Just like last season, this year’s champions will be decided on the last day (July 30) when Atraco take on relegation battling Marines while APR have a tricky away trip to Mukura.

Rayon hammered Kibuye 5-0 to hold on to third position with 43 points. Yussuf Ndayishimiye scored a brace for the blues with Aimable Rucogoza, Theoneste Muhayimana and Cyril Pizolera adding their names on the scoring sheet.

La Jeunesse relegated
Following their loss, Kibuye has dropped into the relegation zone with 21 points, seven points ahead of relegated La Jeunesse which lost 2-0 to Marines.

Amagaju jumped of the bottom two with a vital win over Police. SC Kiyovu were held to a 2-all draw by AS-Kigali at Mumena turf.
