RUSIZI—Two people died while another one sustained serious injuries after being knocked down by a truck in Kamembe sector, Rusizi District.  The accident took place on Monday, June 23, at around 6:45pm at Kamembe market.

The deceased was identified as Nema Niyogushimwa (10) while the second victim  was a woman whose names we could  not establish by press time.

The injured woman, currently admitted at Gihundwe Hospital, was identified as Marcelene Mukankurunziza.

Police told The New Times on Tuesday morning that the accident was caused by negligence on part of  the truck driver.

Claudine Mutesi, one of the eye witnesses, said that the accident happened after some truck loaders offloading sacks of Irish potatoes from the truck might have mistakenly pressed the truck’s accelerator.

When one of the laborers got into the truck’s cabin, Mutesi narrated, the truck went into motion and it thus rammed into the market.

"I was walking towards that truck and suddenly it started moving towards the market entrance where it killed two people. According to my observation, I think the truck driver is to blame for this incidence due in part to his negligence,” said Mutesi.
The Fuso truck registration number RAB 027F belongs to Etienne Ndaruhutse, a businessman in Kamembe town.
Kamembe police arrested the truck driver, Emmanuel Ndayisenga and impounded the vehicle.
