Conman detained for forging Kagame’s signature

It was reported this week that one Robert Munyantore, is under detention for allegedly forging the signature of President Paul Kagame.

The suspect was nabbed carrying documents bearing Kagame’s signature and tried to use it to get a government job. If convicted Munyantore is likely to spend a minimum of five years in jail.

Kagame Invited to 2010 ITU-AU summit

Kagame was this week according to press reports invited to attend and play a leading role in the January 2010 International Telecommunications Union (ITU)-African Union Summit. The summit will focus on ICT in Africa.

ITU Secretary General Dr. Hamadoun Toure told journalists that Kagame’s role in promoting ICT has earned him international recognition adding that he should therefore be able to share with the rest of Africa.

Rwanda to benefit from Comesa funds

It was also reported that Rwanda will be compensated by the COMESA Compensation Fund, for the revenue loss to be incurred when it joins the East African Community (EAC) Customs Union.

Rwanda is expected to join the EAC Customs Union next month and has already applied for the funds amounting to Rwf 12.2 billion it anticipates to loose after joining.

Global fund officials linked to scam

Four senior officials in the Ministry of Health are currently under investigation over misappropriated Global Fund resources.

The officials Dr. Daniel Ngamije, the Coordinator of the Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Global Fund, Jean Pierre Munyabugingo, a Procurement Specialist at the PMU, Jean Baptist Gatabazi, the Head of the Microbiology Unit at the National Reference Laboratory and Emmanuel Ruzindana, the head of the Parastology Unit are alleged to have flouted tendering rules.

It is alleged that they were favouring a particular supplier, something that raised suspicion that they could have received kickbacks.

Kagame calls for innovation in the banking sector

President Paul Kagame, this week, challenged Rwanda’s banking institutions to be more innovative and turn the banking sector’s challenges into opportunities.

He was speaking at the official inauguration of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Rwanda ltd operations. KCB Rwanda ltd is a subsidiary of Kenya’s KCB group.

Conservationists lobby for gorilla protection

Over 100 regional and international conservationists attended the annual Kwita Izina conservation conference, where they lobbied for the protection of mountain gorillas, one of the world’s most endangered species.

The conference according to press reports brought together conservationists from the ‘Gorilla’ countries including Rwanda, Uganda, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo Republic.

Former Miss France donates to one dollar campaign

It was  also reported this week that a former Miss France, Sonia Uwitonze Rolland has donated Euro 1000 (Approx. Rwf 800,000) to the One Dollar Campaign aimed at aiding genocide survivors.

Uwitonze reportedly made her pledge through a letter addressed to the First Lady Jeannette Kagame in her capacity as the President of Unity Club.
