As Rwanda develops, we have seen many things coming up and one of these is the booming Day Care Centre businesses. This business should be carefully watched over because not all seem to be meant for children but are rather close to being more like hostels.

You will be surprised to find that in some centres, there are only rooms for children to sleep but no favourable space for them to play. Even though, they teach children new things, it is not enough until they enjoy that important part of childhood- playing.

Some of these centres have about 40 children who are cared for by about eight workers. For God’s sake some are still toddlers who need to be watched over at all times and have their diapers changed every few minutes.

I was so happy when the mayor of Kigali City, Aisa Kakira, visited different child centres and homes that care for homeless children to make sure that the standards and requirements to accommodate these children are met before they operate.

This is a good way of creating awareness and ensuring that the day care centre business is not a one man’s business that you just start overnight.
