KAMONYI—The Rwanda Red Cross has donated 195 goats to people living with HIV/Aids in Kamonyi district as a way of improving their livelihood.

The livestock, worth over Frw2.3 million, was handed to members of five associations in Musambira and Mugina sectors on Wednesday and most of the recipients travelled long distances without remorse.

"Red Cross is committed to helping vulnerable residents under this health program. This is aimed at creating better living circumstances through proving support of micro-projects and health insurance, which is budgeted at Frw180 million,” said Goemimme Dries, representative the Belgian-Flemish Red Cross in Rwanda.

Cassia Ndindili, president of the Umbrella association of Aids patients, said that "the donation had been long-awaited and an initiative of residents who seek to improve their lives. By next year, the donation will be multiplied among members by for health insurances.”

The same residents also recently received similar assistance, mattresses, blankets and soap under the same programme of supporting vulnerable residents in health insurance.

Red Cross coordinator John Rugabo said that residents would also be expected to give to their children and other members of the community, to help "spread the wealth.”

"This is a follow-up on the project proposals that were submitted by residents and the expectation is to multiply the livestock and put goats to proper use.”
