WHAT started as a dream now looks reasonable. Musanze’s hopes of playing top flight football next season took a gigantic step on Sunday when they defeated Aspej 2-0 at Ubworoherane stadium.

Centre forward Emily Musengamana put the hosts ahead after 13 minutes before winger Theogne Bisengimana killing off the game with a stunning free kick.

The Northern Province club now holds a nine point lead at the helm of Group A with 29 points. Military with 20 points, moved into second spot after a comprehensive 5-2 win over Nyanza. Stella Maris are third with 19 points.

After the Aspej win, Musanze coach Rafiki Nshimiyimana was in a buoyant mood insisting that they are now within touching distance of top flight football.

"With only five games left, I can’t see my team missing out on promotion into the top division. We only need two wins to seal our qualification. Besides, the teams chasing us still have to drop points when they play amongst themselves,” Nshimiyimana told Times Sport.

In Group B, the race was thrown wide open after Etincelles’ shocking 1-0 defeat against National University of Rwanda (UNR).

The defeat means that Muhanga are now a sole point adrift of group leaders Etincelles.  UNR are third with 23 points.
