Rwanda’s golf ace Emmanuel Ruterana claimed victory in Uganda’s MTN monthly mug for May after a remarkable weekend of golf at Kitante Golf Club.

Ruterana parred the third and final extra hole to pip Uganda’s Herman Mutaawe and Godfrey Mande in a three-way play-off.

The trio tied on 144 after two rounds forcing a sudden death play-off at the Par 72 golf course. Using the 12th, 17th and 18th holes, Mande was the first to drop out on hole number 12 after playing a bogey.

Ruterana and Mutaawe returned pars on the 17th hole to force play into the 18th hole. Ruterana chipped in from behind the 18th green for a crucial par while Mutaawe could only return a bogey.

"This means a lot,” the 26-year-old who is still looking for a permanent sponsor after parting ways with BCR early this year.

"It’s always tense coming down to the stretch, the final few holes of a tournament when you are in contention. This feels really good.”

It was his second title of the season and pocketed Shs.1.8m (approx. Frw 0.6m) for the effort. The event was jointly sponsored by a Tanzanian tycoon only identified as Malinzi.
