UNR Grizzlies rose to second place in the national rugby league after Saturday’s 12-0 victory over an in-form Sharks side.

Alain Guy Muhire and Ignatius Nsanzimana scored the varsity side’s tries while Stephan Mutasa converted one of the tries to hand Sharks their second defeat of the season.

It was a bad outing for Sharks who still hold the league’s highest game score (120-0) which they registered against Simba early this month.

After the win, Grizzlies Coach Alphonse Umugire is optimistic his club can still close in on table leaders and reigning champions Buffaloes.

"This win has ignited our confidence and belief that we can still challenge Buffaloes for the title,”he said. Last year, Grizzlies finished fourth behind Buffaloes, Kaduha Tigers and Gorillas.

Buffaloes meanwhile extended their lead at the top of the table after getting default points from Kaduha Tigers. The walk-over comes following Kaduha’s withdrawal from the league.

Buffaloes with 19 points now hold a five point cushion over Grizzlies. Sharks are third with 11 points.
