A Rwandan seminarian priest Edourd Sinayobe is on the verge of winning golden boot in the on-going Vatican’s Clericus Cup in Rome, Italy.

Sinayobe who features for St. Paul’s College has scored 12 goals in the two-month tournament which started in March.

However, his club was knocked out of the race in the semi-finals last week. Sinayobe is keeping his fingers crossed that father Joao Kalevski doesn’t find more goals.

Kalevski has scored 11 goals in the tournament and may claim the award when his side North American Martyrs takes on Australia’s Redemptoris this Saturday.

The Clericus Cup gets divine inspiration from a former goalie and pope: John Paul II. His sports foundation, along with Italian sports authorities and the Vatican, organize the annual tournament.

Saturday’s game will be the third final for Redemptoris, who won the first edition in 2007 and lost to Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church) last year.

The Clericus Cup 2009 has seen 386 priests, monks and seminarians from 69 countries battle on hard-scrabble pitches around Rome to reach the final on the hallowed turf of the Clericus main arena overlooking St Peter’s.

This year’s edition of the tournament has seen a Serie A referee, Stefano Farina, officiating and using new ‘sin bin’ cards that have been proposed in the wider world of soccer.
