National League (After phase two)

APR

APR’s Jean Luc Ndayikengurukiye has mocked his rivals by insisting that the best is yet to come from his team.

APR, the 2008 national volleyball champions have had a perfect start to the league after cruising to their second successive phase win over the weekend.

The army-side humbled arch-rivals National University of Rwanda (UNR) in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, 28-26) to clearly underline their intentions.

"We are playing as a team and getting the results we need. The boys are showing that they are hungry for more success which is very good,” stated Ndayikengurukiye.

The closest UNR came to winning a set was in the third and final set when they forced the army-side to two deuces but still couldn’t see the later off.

Lawrence Yakani, Flavien Uzamukunda and rising star Savio Dominique were the architects of the win. Lawrence in particular was a menace for the varsity side with his impenetrable blocks.

En route the final, APR made light work of St. Joseph Kabgayi with a straight set victory while UNR had to dig deep before clinching the tense-thriller 3-2 against Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC).

Ndayikengurukiye, who helped APR to a treble in his debut season as coach has set new heights this year. The 33-year-old, whose club is well placed at the top of the league table after two phases wants a quadruple.

Last year, APR won the league, Coupe du Rwanda and the Rutsindura Memorial but the ex-APR and national team captain wants to add Carre’d’AS, the only domestic trophy to evade them in 2008.

Although it is still early days in the season, APR’s women wing showed that they were in business mood thrashing UNR in straight sets 3-0.
