With an increase in prize money

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) has shifted this year’s Kagame Club Championship to Sudan.

According to a press statement from Cecafa secretariat in Nairobi, the Cecafa/Kagame Club competition will be hosted in Khartoum, Sudan from June 28-July 12.

The Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye told Times Sport yesterday that this year’s edition will be staged in Khartoum and Port Sudan and that all members must confirm their participation by 8th June.

"We had planned to stage this event in Uganda but the host country had no money so we had to move quickly to get a new host,”

"Last week, Cecafa and Sudan FA met several sponsors and Government officials in Khartoum and secured sponsorship for the tournament,” Musonye said.

The sponsorship package this year has risen to $600,000. The amount includes President Paul Kagame’s annual contribution of $60,000.

"We wish to thank our sponsors in Sudan and President Paul Kagame for his support over the years,” the Cecafa SG added.

This year’s prize money has also increased to $100,000 from $60,000. The winner will pocket $50,000 while the runner-ups will settle for $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.

Atraco are Rwanda’s only representative in the two-week competition.  Kenya’s Tusker is the defending champions after beating Uganda’s URA in last year’s final.
