National basketball champions APR are preparing to break the bank with a mega signing, Times Sport has learnt. The Indomitable Lions were very quiet during the off season but are reportedly ready to make a big name signing. According to the club coach, Cliff Owuor the player APR are craving for will be the Shaquille O’Neal of the national league.

"We have identified the player we want and should we go through with the signing, he will be the biggest player in the league,” Owuor said.

Owuor, who played semi-professional basketball in Kenya, believes that the player estimated to be about 6’11 tall will bolster the side as they plot to retain the league title.

"He is the player we need to ignite that extra strength on court,” he added.

In the off-season, three top APR players (Aboubacar Barame, Mputu Badibanga and Serge Kabange) crossed over to 2007 champions Marine but Owuor believes the trio’s departure won’t deter his side’s pursuit to retain the title.

"They are good players but we have moved on without them,” he said before adding, "Since their departure, we have brought in six players from our string side and are starting to gel as a team that could be strong for many years to come.”

APR has made the ideal start this year after two wins in as many games.

The Zone V champions were gifted default points in their opening league tie against UGB before pulling off a convincing 91-61 victory over Rusizi last Sunday.
