An ottoman can be placed anywhere in the room to give the space a chic look.

Do you ever visit people or check out photos of  living rooms on Pinterest and are left mesmerised, that you wonder the time, creativity, and of course money that was put into making that space look so good to the eye?

Interior décor experts say that your house or living room can look just as fancy on a budget that’s comfortable for you, which means there is no need to break the bank.

According to Tom Gasana, an interior consultant in Kigali, art complements a living room, though he recommends large pieces, especially ones that are unique and can be hung on a wall. They add beauty and character to a room, and look elegant.

He adds that people are easily drawn to large artwork. Oversized art covers up space left mostly when the ceiling is high.

Gasana explains that flowers are magical, they add life to a room. "You can choose to place them in vases. You can decide to go green, natural or mix other colours. Flowers create the mood and ambiance of an area. However, put them in positions that they best fit.”

He also says that light is an important aspect in a room, and recommends opting for a nice chandelier that is oversized, but if necessary, add some floor or table lamps. When the room has enough light, it obviously looks more attractive.

Gasana adds that to create a more sophisticated and elegant look, decorate your room with fancy wall moldings. Making changes to your walls using moldings is an easy way to add character to your home. He says to hire a professional to do this. Although they look expensive, they may actually cost a lot less than you expected.

Gasana also says that long curtains that sweep the floor add instant elegance to a room, when the curtain rail is close to the ceiling, the curtains are more raised, making the space appear higher.

The interior consultant points out that curtains ought to be wide enough to cover the entire window when pulled close without looking constricted. That said, go for stylish curtains as they give a unique charm to the atmosphere.

Good furniture can make the room look cosier, especially with good accent pieces such as throw blankets, pillows, ottomans and others, he adds. An ottoman can go anywhere in the room, next to a sofa, in the corner of the room, or even used as a centre piece instead of a table.

He also notes that walls don’t always have to be white, cream and other common shades. Add some colour to create more glam.

Adrian Innocent, a construction manager, says to quit matching everything in your living room, whether colour, texture or materials. When you try out different things, you will be surprised by the outcome.

He says that even furniture doesn’t necessarily have to be the same. "Play with diverse colours and designs and make the impossible possible. You can blend a variety of woods, glass, metals, and woven materials to create a lush look,” he says.

Add some rugs of great texture, as this leaves the room looking rich.

Innocent adds that decorative wallpaper makes the room more attractive and homely, it makes a formerly dull space lively and gives your living room an artistic appeal.

He also points out that wall mirrors add light and space to a room. They can be hung above sofas or in dining area and give more light to the room. They are believed to bounce light deep into the room, making it appear larger.

Innocent also adds that you can use mirrored cabinet doors to make spaces feel larger. Mirrors on the walls and glass table tops give your room an open and amazing feel.
