Rwanda 55-66 Angola

The Under-18 national basketball team finished the African Championships without registering a single win out of the four matches they played.

The showpiece that is currently underway in Madagascar, since the 4th of this month, attracted 9 African national teams, including powerhouses like Mali, Egypt and Angola.

On Monday, August 8, Rwanda lost its last group game to Angola 55-66 to end the campaign without a victory, since they lost their first three games to Mali, Guinea and Egypt.

The tournament will now go into the quarterfinal stage where the 8 teams that proceeded out of the group phase will rub shoulders to establish who will make it to the semifinals.

After the Angola game, Yves Murenzi, the head coach of the U18 national team said he was not happy with how the tournament went for them.

He noted that one of the key reasons for their struggling is the lack of a mature point guard to orchestrate the team’s plays on the court.

He added that his team did not have enough exposure for such a big stage.

"The players need more games so that they can make mistakes and get them corrected before they go to such a big competition,” he said.

The Quarter-finals are scheduled for Friday August 12.

The teams that qualified for this stage are: Mali, Egypt, Guinea, Angola, Madagascar, Senegal, Algeria and Benin

The semi-finals will take place on August 13.

The final and classification games are scheduled for August 14.

The two teams that reach the finals of the 2022 FIBA U18 African Championship will represent Africa at the 2023 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary.
