AFTER spending two years away from the greens, Joseph Semwaga returned with a bang lifting the April MTN mug at Kigali Golf Club on Saturday.

The handicap 3 golfer stroked 71net beating his closest challenger Davis Kashaka by two strokes.

Despite amassing five bogeys; four on the front nine and one on the back nine, Semwaga quickly assumed a stranglehold on proceedings with birdies on holes 1, 9 and 18.

After his first outing in nearly two years, he said, "It’s always a good feeling when you win such a competition. Apart from one or two wild shots, I think I played good golf today.”

For his spectacular performance, he won himself the coveted mug and a Blackberry handset valued at Rwf 430,000.

Steven Katwiremu, who won the March edition, returned scores of 74net to finish third.

In the second category (handicap 10-18), it was Phillip Jacob all the way. Jacob shot 72net, beating Henry Rugamba by 3 strokes. Bakul Batavia finished third with 76net.

In the final category (19-28), Louis Kamanzi beat Jean Baptist Ahoranayezu on count-back after a tie on 77net.

Away from golf action, it was a cheerless atmosphere for golfers as they said farewell to one of KGC’s loyal partners Themba Khumalo, the out-going MTN Rwanda CEO.

Among other things, Khumalo was very instrumental in helping Jean Baptist Hakizimana join the professional ranks.

Khumalo has relocated to Uganda where he will serve as CEO of MTN Uganda
