For some people, asking for help or seeking advice is a sign of weakness. But this isn’t necessarily the case.

At work for example, someone who wants to succeed or grow in their career, takes any chance they get to learn from others. Or better yet, request for help when they need it.

Experts say this shows how one is eager to learn and prosper in their career.

According to a recent Gully study, people who use their strengths every day are six times more likely to be engaged on the job, leading to a positive impact on performance, productivity, and profitability.

Jackeline Iribagiza, a counsellor and matron at St Martyrs secondary school, says when it comes to career, anyone willing to seek help from others shows how their commitment and competence are on another level than those who are not willing to seek advice.

She however recommends that before reaching out for help or support, one needs to be specific and strategic, which helps others to figure out the best way to help out as required.

"This will guide the mentor on the best way they can bring the best out of you. It also communicates to them that though you are seeking help, you already have an idea about what you are supposed to do, the only missing thing is the guidance,” she says.

According to Beryl Akinyi, head of the counselling department at Mother Mary International School, when you seek advice concerning your career journey, it means that you are cautious enough not to ruin your career.

She also notes that seeking out others like that in a working environment helps an individual develop strong relationships with other workmates.

For instance, she mentions that when people get to know your strengths and weakness, it becomes easier for them to find the best ways to help where necessary, thus building an authentic relationship between you and them.

Besides, she points out that this could also be a win-win situation for everyone, explaining that whenever one asks for advice or help, others are able to share their expertise and talents, thereby empowering them in one way or another.

This is also believed to be the best way or opportunity to open doors to finding a mentor who is eager to help on an ongoing basis and share their knowledge with you.
