Camp Kigali Memorial Site
The site is a former Rwandan military base where 10 Belgian UN soldiers were assassinated as they were protecting the then Prime Minister, Agathe Uwilingiyimana, at the beginning of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. It is believed that the murders were pre-planned by Hutu extremists in order to provoke a withdrawal of the UN forces, which then cleared the way for the full scale of the Genocide to unfold. To get to know the history of Rwanda, this is one of the places to visit. Entry is free and there is a guide who will show you the rooms and placards to read that explain the lives of the soldiers who died. Some of the walls are still damaged where the bursting grenades exploded.
Kandt House Museum of Natural History
Kandt House Museum, previously known as Kandt House Museum of Natural History, is under the authority of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. It is partitioned into three main parts where the first bestows Rwandan life, socially, economically, and politically – before the colonial period. The second part discovers the inclination of the Rwandan people during the colonial period, and lastly, the third part indicates the history of Kigali, before, during and after the colonial era. Kigali was made the capital upon independence in 1962. The museum was named after Richard Kandt who was the first colonial governor of Rwanda, on behalf of Germany, until the early 1900s. The place is open for tourists and guides will take you around and teach you more about the history of Rwanda and answer all your queries.
1000 Hills Distillery
If you’re above 18, you can check out this place for liquor, they produce five unique Made in Rwanda, triple distilled liquors, such as a Coffee Liqueur, Vodka, Light Spiced Rum, London Dry Gin and Single Malt Whisky. They also have a variety of infused coffees with the liquors. It was founded in 2014 by two men who love fine whisky. The place has a nice outdoor and indoor setting with delicious meals, Wi-Fi, fire pit and great view. For easy access, KK 30 Avenue Plot 3056, Kigali.
Stadium Amahoro
This versatile stadium is the largest playground in Rwanda. It hosts football matches, concerts and social events with a total capacity crowd of 25,000 seats but ongoing upgrades will see the stadium’s capacity grow to 45,000. It’s one of the historical places, during the Genocide in 1994, it was provisionally a ‘UN Protected Site’ hosting to up to 12,000 people mainly Tutsis refugees. You can pass by, it’s in Remera near BK Arena, a multi-purpose indoor arena, used mostly for basketball and volleyball matches.
Mount Kigali
This isn’t a mountain like it is perceived. It is a hill and stones with human development, located in the city of Kigali’s southwestern suburbs. Around the area, there are restaurants and some businesses although it is a little bushy. A trek at mount Kigali wouldn’t be so hectic like a mountain hike. As you take your trip around, you can start from Nyamirambo, to the north, up to other Kigali areas. Finish your trip around one of the Nyamirambo restaurants, you can order a drink to quench your thirst.
City Arts
Go learn how to dance from Latino, African contemporary, to tap dances and more. This is a performing and visual arts centre with inventory resources for both children and adults, offering classes mainly in dance but also in acrobatics. What’s interesting about the place is that it has teachers from different countries and diverse backgrounds.
