Commonwealth Youth Forum kicks off, Kagame mourns UAE President, more about last week

What a week it has been! The long-awaited Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) was finally held in Kigali, flags of all 54 member states were raised, as the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) started on Sunday, June 19.

A day before, President Paul Kagame had received President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau at his office, Village Urugwiro.

Kagame also awarded Houlin Zhao, the Secretary-General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) with the National Order of Honour (Agaciro) medal on June 14.

It was in recognition of his distinguished service as the leader of ITU during "a very consequential period” for the globalization of telecommunications technology, according to the Office of the President.

On June 15, Kagame arrived in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for an official visit during which he mourned the death of late President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who passed on May 13.

On June 17, a Congolese soldier crossed the DRC-Rwanda border in Rubavu and indiscriminately started firing shots on the Rwandan side, leaving two Rwandan police officers injured. 

He was then shot dead 25 metres inside Rwandan territory by a Rwanda National Police officer.

On Saturday, a group of armed thugs suspected to be remnants of FLN crossed over from Burundi and shot at a public passenger bus and killed the driver, a passenger and injured six others, according to a Rwanda National Police statement.

Earlier that day, Tanzania won the 8th edition of the KwibukaT20 in Kigali after beating Kenya by 44 runs in the finals.

This women’s tourney is held annually in remembrance of victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
