Rwanda has handed over to DR Congo the body of an FARDC soldier who was shot dead  on Friday, June 17,  after he crossed into Rwanda and indiscrimantely fired rounds, leaving  two Rwanda National Police officers injured.

Senior DRC officials, including Brig. Gen. Ghislain Mulamba Tshinkobo, the Commander of the 34th Military Region in DRC recieved the body Friday afternoon.

The Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM), a DR Congo-based regional body that monitors cross-border security is investigating the incident.

The deceased soldier, who was armed with an AK47 assault riffle, was shot 25 meters into Rwanda territory by security personnel on duty who acted to stop his attack.

"A Rwandan police officer shot back to protect civilians crossing the border post," the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) said in a statement issued shortly after the incident.

Ildephonse Kambogo, the Mayor of Rubavu District, told The New Times that Rwandan cross-border traders have suspended their work due to safety concerns.

"We encourage people involved in cross-border activities to avoid anything that puts them in harms way,” he said.

Kambogo, however, encouraged Rubavu residents to keep doing business with their Congolese counterparts if they cross into Rwanda for goods and services.
