Investing in people management: What it means for an organisation
Tuesday, June 07, 2022

In any organisation, there are people of different calibre. Some are considered to work well when in teams; others do better as individuals, while there are those who simply have to be motivated to work hard.

To manage these differences, and align the entire team can be quite challenging and for this reason, ample skills in managing people in any organisation are very vital.

Menelas Nkotanyi, a software engineer with Arc grid Consultant company ltd believes that as leaders, it’s important to keep into consideration that your team is important, and shouldn’t as well overlook their management skills as this has a positive impact on the organisation as a whole.

People management however is about managing people in the workplace, and most importantly, making sure these people are provided for and have everything they need to get their jobs done.

Nkotanyi says when you manage others, it means you are simply paying attention to and caring for your team, which could mean looking after their wellbeing as well as helping them overcome challenges and reach their goals.

"When you manage your team well with the right skills as a leader, it can help you not only as an individual, but also as a team to produce good quality work and develop into a successful company or organisation,” he says.

Leah Mukaneza, a career life coach, says for those who are supposed to manage others, there is a need to have good communication skills as this will help you communicate with others in an effective way.

This, she says, helps to manage the behaviour of professionals or employees and create teams that are more satisfied, motivated, qualified and engaged with organisational goals.

"This in the end, I believe plays a big role when it comes to generating better results for the organisation. Also, when you communicate well, it will motivate people to work hard as they are assured there is always someone to listen to and share your grievances as well,” she says.

Mukaneza also advises that employers, or those in charge of leading others should stay away from the narrative that whenever there is motivation, financial incentives should be attached.

"Personally I believe that the ways of achieving this goal when it comes to motivation are diverse and may vary according to an individual. As leaders, we have a role in supporting and inspiring others, which revolves around managing others,” she says.

Still on communication, she says this is a significant point for people management and business success. For this reason, it must be clear, objective and accessible.

On the other hand, Nkotanyi says when you want to manage people efficiently, there is a need to work as a team, as this becomes even more essential if done effectively as it helps each member understand their role in the team and be aligned with organisational goals.

When you manage people well, he says it also creates a conducive environment for everyone to feel comfortable, which increases productivity in general.

Meanwhile, when you manage people in a good and professional manner, experts believe that it helps increase a sense of belonging, shows the importance of everyone for the business and how much their work assists in the achievement of business goals.
