Climate change top on agenda

The third edition of African Ministers of Finance and Environment conference on Financing for Development (F4D) is expected to convene in Kigali on May 21.

A statement from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) indicates that the one day meeting will among other things address issues of how African governments can finance the management of climatic change.

According to UNECA, the meeting is expected to draw over 200 senior level delegates.

Expected participants include Finance and Environment ministers, in and out-of-country senior representatives from multi-lateral and bi-lateral donor agencies.

Others are high level representatives of the Government of Rwanda from the President’s Office, the Supreme Court, Parliament and Prime Minister’s office.

The F4D is a high-level strategic forum for dialogue between the Government of Rwanda, other African Governments and Development Partners and according to UNECA; its main objectives are "to assess the current situation regarding climate change and its direct consequence on economic growth and how it affects growth projections.”

"It will also serve as a platform for governments to showcase their major achievements and constraints in implementing climate change related programmes,” reads the UNECA statement.

The conference will be held under the theme: "climate change financing.”
