GASABO - The visiting United Nation’s Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Executive Director, Ines Alberdi, has expressed satisfaction over women’s prominence and parity in the country’s governance.

Ms Alberdi, who arrived in Kigali early this week for her first visit in Rwanda, is on a working visit in the region.

Kigali hosts the UNIFEM’s central African regional office that covers nine countries.

Addressing Journalists shortly after meeting President Paul Kagame yesterday, Alberdi said Rwanda is a unique country in the world where women have a significant representation in all the sectors of life, including justice, parliament, and police among others.

"We’re very pleased with the prominence and parity of women in the political organisation of the country,” she said.

She said her discussions with the President had also centred on issues regarding economic situation of women in general, and the commitment of UNIFEM to support various programmes aimed at improving women’s lives.

"We have promised that we will continue to support initiatives that guarantee women’s economic security here,” she said.

Ms Alberdi also held discussions with the Speaker of the lower Chamber of Parliament, Rose Mukantabana, where she hailed women lawmakers for participating in the country’s economic transformation.

 "We talked about laws abolishing discrimination for women, especially those related to properties, Gender Based Violence and many more,” Speaker Mukantabana said.

Ms Alberdi’s visit to Rwanda was aimed at witnessing it progress in Gender Equality and women’s empowerment, as well as affirming commitment to ongoing programmes in the country.
