Liquid Intelligent Technologies Rwanda inked a deal worth Rwf 102,015,000 ($100,000) per year with the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE) and Imbuto Foundation to help preserve Genocide memorials in the country.

The ten-year deal was signed on Wednesday, May 25 at MINUBUMWE head office in Kacyiru.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Minister Jean Damascene Bizimana commended Liquid Telecom for the support and revealed that the partnership will greatly benefit youth.

"We need to build a better future as well as preserve our history in general so we need to focus on youth because they are the majority in the country,” he said

He said that currently, there is an information gap regarding the country’s past, saying that if nothing is done to preserve what is there, future generation will be mostly affected.

Geraldine Umutesi, the Deputy Director-General of Imbuto Foundation said that this partnership is timely since Rwandans are marking the 100 days of commemoration and commended the firm for the gesture.

She urges other partners especially in the private sector to embrace this noble cause, saying that there was still more to be done.

In addition, she said that historical clarity is important because it is a major tool towards fighting against Genocide denial.

Speaking at the same occasion Sam Nkusi, the chairman of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Rwanda said that it is hard to succeed in business without unity, underscoring the importance to preserve memory.

"Memorials are there to learn from and remind Rwandans and the world about a past they should never repeat. Adding to this, memorials should be designed to contribute to the global body of historical knowledge through documentation centres and galleries,” he said.

In addition, he said that Liquid believes that by adding documentation and building up memorials it is possible to support the healing journey and convey a message of hope to Rwandans and the entire world.

Nkusi further said that it is important to remember as well as have well-preserved history and that is why Liquid contributed to such activity.

He also revealed that as they grow as a telecommunication company, they might contribute more to this project arguing that they dream to be big.

What Liquid’s initiative will help?

Liquid initiative preserves the evidence at the eight national level memorials and Documents and research which will entail the creation of galleries, documentation centres and libraries, as well as the sponsoring of researchers.

In addition, they will also provide psychological support which includes roofing the amphitheatre in Nyanza/Kicukiro, creating memory gardens for all eight national level memorials and adding a fully-fledged counselling room to each of those memorials.
