Twelve cars have been confirmed for the 22nd edition of the Rally de Huye dubbed ‘Memorial Claude Gakwaya’ set for this weekend in the Southern Province.

National championship leader Rudy Cantanhede navigated by Israel David in their Subaru Impreza STI will set the pace in the 192km.

The rally, which is the sixth round on the Rwanda Automobile Club national championship, will be flagged off from Hotel Ibis in Huye town at 1pm today.

The Rwanda Automobile Club Organising Secretary, Christian Gakwaya said preparations for the event had been completed and scrutineering takes place today morning at Mukoni in Huye district from 10am to midday.

"Everything is in place for the Rally, which is expected to be dusty. The route is smooth, but winding in some sections,” said Gakwaya, son to the late Claude Gakwaya.

On day-one, the cars will be flagged off 1pm at Hotel Ibis go for the 139 km competitive section, which will go through Mukoni, Gishamvu, Nyakizu, Cyahinda, Nyakizu from where they will head to Cyahinda, Mubumano through Mukoni vie Ngoma back to Piscine for the first check point.

From there, they will proceed to Mukoni, Rango, Kibirizi through Ndora vie Douane to the Cathedral with the last car expected to be at Ibis at 5pm.

After an hour or of rest, the cars will go for a night competitive special section, which starts at 7.30pm from Ibis to Cathedral, Rwasave though Ndora and Gisagara then back to Ibis. They will do this route twice.

Day-two on Sunday, the cars will be flagged off from Hotel Ibis at 7am to go through Mukoni, Rango, Kibilizi, Muganza to Gisagara, vie Douane, Cathedral back to Ibis. They will also make this route twice before finishing at Ibis with the first car expected at 12pm.

The rally is organised in memory of the late to rally ace Gakwaya who past away in 1986 having been Rwanda’s top flag bearer in several championships within the great lakes region.

He was also named the millennium champion by BBC in 2000 for the hard work he did in elevating the sport in the country during his time.

National champion Rudy Cantanhede who also won last year’s event will be all but crowned champion again if takes this year’s edition. He won there in 2005 and 2006.

This year’s edition sponsors include Banques Populaire du Rwanda, SONAFI, City Market, TPGL, Akagera Motors, Hotel IBIS and Horizon Express.

After Rally de Huye, Rally de Mille Colline, which is scheduled for December is the last round on this year’s Rwanda Automobile Club national championship calendar.
