You’ve been excited about the festive season for a while now, possibly even have your attire chosen that you plan to wear for an end-of-year festive bash. You have decorated your house and compound as festively as possible, but then you woke up one day to a new ‘yellow paper’ that says parties or any kind of ceremonies are prohibited. Mood kill.

I remember back in the day, Christmas was always a chance to meet family members you didn’t even know, relatives who returned from over countries, those in the village—it was a time to remember the importance of family and friends.  We enjoyed talks from our elders and activities we had together, someone always had a new dance style to share.

However, this time around, things are looking dull but this shouldn’t kill your Christmas spirit. Here are some ways to enjoy the festive season albeit safely;

Outdoors: Even though parties are prohibited, people can still go out and ensure social distancing. Take a ride around the city before curfew and enjoy the beautifully decorated Christmas lights on the streets.

Virtual parties: Organise a Zoom party or something similar on any other app. Come up with games and conversation to share.

Cook: You have always put money aside for the festive season because you usually invite people over, but this time, it doesn’t require a lot of effort. Cook that meal you have always wanted and share pictures with your loved ones.

Explore new things: Use this time to get out of your comfort zone. Do charity, take a piano class or even learn a new language.

Movies: Netflix has a tonne of Christmas-themed movies to watch, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If movies are not your thing, read a book. Kigali has very many bookstores, it is unlikely you’ll fail to find something of interest to you.

Stories: Now is a good time to tell your children all about Christmas, its origin and significance. Many are curious to know.

Secret Santa: Surprise someone you care about with a Christmas gift. Or even a Christmas meal, using a delivery service.

Home karaoke: Nothing will boost your spirit like karaoke. Do it as a family and sing your favourite Christmas songs, anything from Mariah Carey’s famous ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ to Pentatonix’s ‘Little Drummer Boy’.

There is so much more to do if you just think outside the box. Christmas can only be dull if you let it.
