Skill-based training is believed to be a worthwhile investment that leads to increased productivity.

The training can include learning a new skill through online training, practising and applying a skill through role-play exercise, and even receiving ongoing coaching among others.

Mark Ndagijimana, an educator at GS Ruhango Catholique School in Ruhango District believes that the world is moving so fast and that formal training and the education people received a while back is now getting out of date.

He points out that if organisations don’t provide skills’ training for their employees; it will be hard for such institutions to keep up with the competition from their rivals.

Importance

Ndagijimana says effective skill-based training allows one to learn crucial information, practice learning the new information as well as receive feedback on their performance in general.

This, he says applies to anyone working in any organisation and it tends to enhance overall job satisfaction.

Faustin Mutabazi, the chief executive officer at Educational Consultancy Bureau, an organisation that supports education and curriculum activities, says as a leader, he believes in skills’ training for every employee.

He explains that providing employees with access to upskilling opportunities would mean that their engagement and overall company loyalty is likely to increase in general.

In addition to this, Mutabazi says skills’ training also gives one a chance to explore something different and think beyond their current capabilities.

"This is just one way of making their work more interesting and fulfilling, which ensures satisfaction,” he says.

Besides, he says by establishing a wide skills’ training program in your institution, it enables high-quality, consistent training across the organisation’s workforce.

Sylvain Bizirema, another educator at Ecole des Sciences St Louis de Montfort in Nyanza District believes that in anyone’s career, when they get access to any training whatsoever, it increases their productivity.

In addition to learning how to complete new tasks and take on more responsibility, with the training, he says one can as well learn advanced techniques to help them complete everyday tasks more efficiently in their daily routine.

Also, he notes that when you get access to any training, especially on the side of the organisation, it helps reduce the need for employee supervision.

"I believe when one is equipped well with different skills, it teaches them how to do their jobs better. In addition, it helps such individuals to work more independently and develop the attitude of working with less or without supervision,” he says.

Mutabazi says because of the advancement in science and technology, there have been numerous changes in the working environment.

"This is evident by the new roles emerging in different work environments. This definitely shows how important it is for one to be knowledgeable about advanced skills’ training,” he says.

In addition, he mentions that individuals who undergo skills’ training programs also tend to feel confident about their position in their respective workplaces.

Depending on the benefits that come along with this form of training, Mutabazi says it also encourages and motivates one to stay in the present work environment thus paving way for a reduction in employee turnover rates.
