NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE has been chosen as one of the districts to benefit from a US $21m water project.

The project will be funded by the government in partnership with the Dutch Government which has committed US $16.3m, UNICEF $1.2m, and the Rwanda government US $ 2.25m.

Other districts to benefit from the water project include Burera, Nyabihu and Rubavu. It is expected to increase access to clean water in order to improve sanitation and hygiene among residents.

Once completed, it would benefit over 400,000 residents, including 200 rural primary schools and 50 health facilities in the four districts.  

At a two-day workshop organised to hammer out the implementation of the four-year project, Mayors from the four districts signed a Memorandum of  Understanding for the project’s execution.

Speaking after the workshop, Joseph Zaraduhaye, the Acting Mayor for the Burera District noted that the project would address the water scarcity problem especially in the hilly areas of the district and promote sanitation in the rural areas.

Participants at the workshop also said that the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) project, would promote safe hygienic practices in the communities.
