Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Women’s Basketball Club on Wednesday, November 17 left the country for the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Women’s Club Champion 2021 which starts on Thursday, November 18 and runs through 23 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The team departed aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

REG and The Hoops are the two clubs that will represent Rwanda at the tournament.

REG goes to the tournament courtesy of the fact that they are the 2021 league champions in Rwanda, while The Hoops’ participation is due to the fact that they were supposed to represent Rwanda in the same competition last year, but missed out as the Covid-19 pandemic hindered the tournament from taking place.

Esperance Mukaneza, the Head Coach of REG women team told Times Sport that they will try to make Rwanda proud in the Zone 5 competition.

"Our goal in Tanzania is to reach the final, and even win the trophy, and that is possible because we are taking a strong, confident team,” she said.

The Hoops Rwanda went to Tanzania on Tuesday night.

The six teams that will play in the tournament are: Gladiator (Burundi), KPA (Kenya), Equity (Kenya), REG (Rwanda), The Hoops (Rwanda) and Don Bosco (Tanzania).
