MUHANGA — The Rwanda Office of Information (Orinfor) has donated money and food stuffs  to Genocide survivors in Kagitarama village, Nyamabuye sector.

The support worth over  Rwf.1.5m was handed over to the beneficiaries by Oscar Kimanuka, the Orinfor Director General, on April 11 and will assist about 102 survivors.

"The visit was aimed at consoling and to give survivors hope for the future and the support should be used to solve some of the problems faced by survivors in the area,” Kimanuka said.

He also remarked that there has been progress in the last 15 years after the Genocide against Tutsi, but survivors still need the attention of others including the local media industry.

The survivors expressed gratitude to Orinfor staff and promised to use the funds towards  self help projects.

Alphonse Ntigurirwa, who spoke on behalf of survivors, said that the  survivors faced a myriad of problems such as lack of proper shelter,  education and health insurance.

He also said that the district has neglected to address the plight of the survivors. He made a plea for the local authorities to come to their assistance by breaking  what he termed as the red tape that stood between the survivors  and the authorities by  addressing urgently these  problems.

Ntigurirwa also stated that survivor’s security has improved largely because of the quick response to emergency cases by security officials.

Yvonne Mutakwasuku, the district mayor, promised support to the survivors and revealed that over Rwf.4m has been collected in a bid to solve some of their problems.
