Editor,

I woke up yesterday morning with a smile on my face because of, I believe, a heroic act on the part of a certain Rwandan politician. Senator Augustin Iyamuremye.

Speaking during the ceremony to mark the end of the 15th annual official commemoration week of the Genocide against the Tutsi, came out to apologise to all those he could not help while their relatives or family members were slain during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He said, he could actually have done something to save them.

I think it was a bold move because, despite the fact that many people have held up their hands saying ‘ we did not kill a single soul’, no one has ever been humble enough to say that they didn’t do enough.

I understand that the dark days must have been frightening for everyone in the country, but maybe a few more acts of bravery could have saved more lives.

It’s a pleasant surprise when someone of the senators stature owns up to the fact that he/she didn’t do everything in his/her power to save lives.

That simple act of being held accountable will give more impetus to the greater effort of forgeting a united Rwanda.
