In a bid to reduce traffic jams during the peak hours in the city, Atraco, the public commuter taxis association, is set to construct another taxi park in a month’s time.

The revelation was made by Atraco Director General, Twahirwa Dodo, while meeting journalists last week at the body’s head office in Nyabugogo.

He explained that Kigali City Council had accepted Atraco’s request to construct another park behind Rubangura’s building to reduce traffic jams during evening hours.

"Construction work will start in a month’s time. The engineers at Nyarugenge District are studying the construction plan. After this, we shall embark on the job quickly,” Dodo said.

The new park is expected to accommodate between 60 and 80 vehicles. He said Atraco had also embarked on a number of alternative projects aimed at resolving the problems affecting the public transport sector in the country.

There have been concerns from the public that Kigali city is facing a serious problem of traffic jams of late. This problem is mostly experienced during the morning and evening peak hours.

Dodo explained that the new taxi park will be a short term intervention as the transport body finds a lasting solution for the jams.

"This park will only stay for five years. After this period, we shall get another permanent park that meets Kigali City Master Plan standards,” he explained.

Traffic jams in major cities is partly caused by the tendency to concentrate business activities in one area, especially the city centre.
