Today, Monday, June 21, is World Music Day. The day, also known as Make Music Day, is a unique annual celebration of music world over. Young and amateur musicians all over the world are encouraged to organise concerts and other musical events on this occasion. 

While, physical shows are not advisable, if not unauthorised, due to Covid-19 restrictions, you can celebrate the day through online platforms. To help you mark the annual occasion, The New Times looks at the top 10 most viewed Rwandan songs on YouTube.

Slowly by Meddy

The romantic slow Zouk song hit 50 million views last month. It’s by far the most viewed Rwandan video on YouTube. Directed by Licky Licky and Roger, Slowly was published in August 2017. The song is said to be popular for weddings across Africa.

Nimekupata Yesu by Ambassadors of Christ Choir

The song is the 2rd most viewed Rwandan song on YouTube with 23 million views. It was released in 2018 with Kiswahili lyrics, which helped make it popular across the East African region.

Katerina by Bruce Melodie

Bruce Melodie’s Katerina boasts 9.6 million views on YouTube. The Afro beat song was released in 2019 after Bruce Melodie’s visit to Europe where it was shot. It was directed by one of the leading videographers in Belgium, Julien Bmjizoo, and written by Mike Kayihura, one of the most famous composers in Rwanda.

Lose Control by The Ben and Meddy

Lose control lyric video has 8 million views. The collabo was published in 2018 and directed by US-based video producer Chris Kayite. The song features two top Rwandan celebrities, US-based The Ben and Meddy, is easily one of the reasons behind the numbers.

Holy Spirit by Meddy

Holy Spirit has 7.9 million views. The song is one of the few gospel songs meddy has, which is why many people liked it. It was produced in 2013 by cedru.

On Fire by Andy Bumuntu

The Afro-kizomba fusion song was released in 2019 and has since drawn over 7.8 million views on YouTube. The song was directed by Bob Chris with impressive lighting and Kizomba dances. It describes the ‘love on fire’ sang in the hit.

Ntawamusimbura by Meddy

The love song, which refers to a lover as irreplaceable, is often part of the menu at weddings. Meddy’s then girlfriend (now his wife) Mimi Mehfira features in the video, which was released in 2017. It has 6.9 million views.

Habibi by The Ben

The video caught many people’s attention due to its quality. Cedro, one of the leading producers in the country, was the man behind the camera for the incredible scenes in the video. The song was released in 2016 and has 6 million views on YouTube.

Adi Top by Meddy

Produced by Pastor-P, the song has a vibe which makes many people playing it want to take to the dance floor. It was released in 2018 and has 5 million views.

Thank You by The Ben and Tom Close

The gospel song was shot by Meddy Saleh in the middle of Kigali. It was produced in 2017 by Made Beat Pro and has 4.2 million views on YouTube.
