The Rwanda Bureau of Standards has been asked to advance on the quality of Rwandan products through efficient application of standards and quality assurance as the country aims to benefit from membership in the East African Community.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry, Investment promotion, Tourism and Cooperatives Protais Mitali said this during the celebrations to mark the International Standards Day which was held in Musanze. 

"Our products should have a well-built link to the international standards system.

We shall not be a market for foreign products but should also have what to sell outside,” Mitali said  .

Production of quality products is a concern for the country as it begins to compete against more seasoned veterans in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Customers must have a duty to ensure that what they buy is valid and standard, Mitali said.

Companies which emerged the best in products labelling competition held this year were rewarded with Sina Gerald-Nyirangaram, Sorwatea and many others given certificates of recognition.

The Director of Rwanda Bureau of Standards Anastas Kimonyo said that the bureau was committed to being an acknowledged regional leader in application of standards.

The Rwanda Bureau of Standards was established in 2002 to undertake all activities pertaining to the development of standards and quality assurance in the country.
