RUSIZI — The Mayor of Rusizi District, Fabien Sindayiheba has called upon local leaders in their respective positions in the district to support vulnerable genocide survivors  during this forthcoming Genocide commemoration period.

Sindayiheba made the call on Tuesday March 24 at Rusizi District conference hall in Kamembe sector during a one-day meeting called for the purposes of preparing for the Genocide commemoration week.

"I appeal to each and every leader who is here in this meeting to try his/her best in providing any form of financial support to vulnerable genocide survivors during this 15th April Genocide commemoration period because as you know some of them still have nowhere to live and others are still trapped in poverty,” Sindayiheba urged.

He further asked participants to encourage residents in their respective work and residential places to promote unity and reconciliation amongst one another for the good of the nation during this Genocide commemoration period.

Shortly after the same meeting, the Rusizi vice Mayor in charge of social affairs, Franse Nirere told The New Times that the district management has already collected Rwf.3 million from all the district employees which will be used to help genocide survivors in various activities during this year’s commemoration.

She added that the district   has finalized the construction of over 800 houses for vulnerable genocide survivors in the district. She further said that the Genocide memorial sites which have been in deplorable condition  have since been rehabilitated.

Representatives from IBUKA, an association for Genocide survivors, said that there are some areas which do not have Genocide sites like Gatandara and Kizura cells in Gashonga Sector. She further  appealed to the Government to construct some Genocide memorial sites in such locations.
