Football icon and Argentina legend Diego Maradona succumbed to a cardiac arrest on Wednesday aged 60.

His death was confirmed by Argentina’s football association. He had been recently hospitalised in Buenos Aires where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot on the brain.

Maradona, one of the greatest footballers of all time, captained his country to World Cup glory in Mexico in 1986, and later inspired Italian side Napoli to two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990.

The world is mourning, and fans in Africa have also expressed their grief following the ‘untimely’ demise of Maradona.

George Weah

Former Ballon d’Or winner and current President of Liberia, George Weah, said: "We have lost a legend and an icon. This is a very sad day for the football world. On behalf of the government and people of Liberia and in my own name, I wish to extend deepest condolences to the family, the people of Argentina and all lovers of the beautiful game for the death of the Great Diego Maradona.”

He added: "His extraordinary story as a kid who unshackled himself from the yoke of poverty and used his mastery of football to bring joy, inspired millions. May his soul rest in perpetual peace.”

Didier Drogba

Côte d’Ivoire legend and former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba eulogised Maradona as his ‘idol’, noting that the first football shirt he wore was a Maradona jersey.

"My idol has died, RIP Diego Armando Maradona. My first ever football shirt, the man behind my love for football Gracias El Pibe.”

Nwankwo Kanu

Former Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu, also a member of the 2003/04 Arsenal invincible squad, underscored that Maradona’s memory will live on forever.

"R.I.P Diego Armando Maradona. Your memory will live on forever.”

Samuel Eto’o

Two-time UEFA Champions League winner and the all-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scorer, Samuel Eto’o, was also devastated by the Argentine’s passing.

"2020, what a year! Good rest boss”

Asamoah Gyan

Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan said: "Rest In Peace. Thank you so much for what you have done in the soccer world.”
