Having a second job is a lifesaver for many people, especially young professionals. Being able to get an extra income from a second job can help you cater for extra expenses or even beef up your savings account but also protects you from the risk of losing your primary income source.

Balancing multiple jobs and life is important but is also not a walk in the park.

For Doreen Mutesi, a procurement officer with a retail side business, as long as you manage your time and obligations wisely, in the long run, you will be able to get your work done more efficiently, and fit in some time for fun as well.

"Of course, juggling two or more jobs requires more time. That’s time you can’t take back, and time you won’t get to spend with your family, friends, and on your personal needs. Although working 9-5 daily is overkill, juggling two jobs will not kill you,” she says.

She adds that when entrenched in the day-to-day of your multiple jobs, it’s important to keep the end goal in mind which means that you will not be working many jobs forever.

"To stay motivated, keep a realistic time frame in mind. For instance, once you earn a certain amount, you will quit at least one of your extra jobs. Or, maybe once you gain experience from a part-time job, you need to start looking for a full-time job,” she says.

For Richard Mupenzi, a marketer, freelancing can be another side businesses you can pursue, if you do not want to be overwhelmed with work.

"The drain on your time and challenges to your schedule can be just as demanding. Freelancing gigs enable you become a bit more in control than with adding another type of job to your schedule,” he says.

He also adds that staying active and energised plays a big part in keeping one sane from all the work stress.

"Even though you might find it impossible to commit to a comprehensive workout every day, you can at least try taking a walk or climbing up and down your building’s stairs a few times during your lunch hour. Another trick is to combine one desk job that stimulates your mind and another somewhat physical job that exercises you while freeing up your brain. Just avoid taking two physically exerting jobs,” he says.
