And the winner is...

You already know. President Joe Biden! Finally! America’s back, baby! Okay, excuse me while I calm my excited self down but doesn’t it feel like a dark cloud has lifted and the world is breathing a little easier now that a steady and experienced captain is steering the ship? The storm that’s been the last four years is about to be over. All the falsehoods, belittling, flip-flopping, delusion and sheer chaos will hopefully stop. There’s a certain level of maturity and decency that should come with holding certain positions.

You can’t always be right or have your way all the time and just because you disagree with someone doesn’t mean you should be disrespectful or resort to name-calling. Words matter. Kids have been watching and listening to the leader of the Free World shove or pick fights with other world leaders, shutdown reporters or storm out of press briefings, repeatedly use foul language — and that’s not even the half of it. Like Biden said, "We’re opponents, not enemies.

” Not that he himself is perfect but one of his most endearing qualities is that he knows he’s flawed and will not hesitate to own up to past mistakes, admit he was wrong and duly apologise. That not only makes him human but also the adult in the room. Don’t ask me who the kid is! So the margin of victory was narrow and not the landslide many had hoped for but a win is a win. It’s disconcerting that over 70 million voters want the other guy to keep the job but that’s democracy for you. Funny though how those who find themselves on the losing side this time are refusing to concede yet they had no problem urging the losers four years ago to deal with it. Well, look who can’t deal now!

They were accorded a smooth and gracious transition by the previous administration of which President-Elect Biden was the outgoing Vice President then. It’s unfortunate that the same courtesy is not being extended to him. Good thing is that having worked closely with the White House before means he knows his way around the ropes. As for all the talk about his ‘advanced’ age, 78 really isn’t that old. If your dad, uncle or someone you know were the same age, would you consider them too old and senile as Biden’s detractors tried so hard to convince everybody? I don’t think he’s going to surround himself with only 70 plus year olds.

His Vice President pick was deliberate for many reasons. Aside from restoring some longstanding American values, this administration will sure have lots of young blood and diversity. Hard to believe America is only now getting its first ever female VP in Kamala Harris when even Africa has already had at least three female Heads of State! By the way, can we talk about how her name gives East and West African vibes? Just swap the ‘L’ with ‘R’ or replace ‘K’ with ‘C’ and you have ‘Kamara’ or ‘Camara’.

Truly one of our own! Moral of both her and Biden’s journey? It’s not how you start but how you finish, even though they’re kind of just starting this new chapter. But perhaps the biggest take away from Biden’s victory in particular is a reminder for us all not to give up on our dreams. You know the mantras. "Don’t stop believing”, "Good things come to those who wait” and such. Life’s not a ‘race’, not even when you’re running for President of The United States of America. It’s been a marathon for this man who has faced tremendous adversity, having lost his first wife and young daughter early on and his son only a few years ago to cancer. If he’s compassionate and empathetic towards others, it’s because he shares their struggles. He’s proof that it’s better to try and fail than not try at all and that it’s not how many times you fall.

He could have given up his Presidential ambitions after two failed attempts but look where his resilience got him! Speaking of dreams, I think it’s safe for those who had put their ‘American Dream’ on hold to resume chasing because come January 20th, President Joe Biden has promised to strike down or reverse all those ridiculous travel bans. Plus, I haven’t heard him talk about building any walls so we may as well get our papers in order!
