President Paul Kagame on Friday November 6 held a video conference call with the CEO of Gavi Alliance, Dr Seth Berkley, during which they discussed immunisation and vaccination efforts in Rwanda and globally.

Gavi, which stands for Global alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations, is an international organisation aimed to improve access to new and underused vaccines for children from the poorest countries.

According to a statement, President Kagame commended Berkley’s leadership of the vaccines' body during this unprecedented time of the Covid-19 pandemic that has disrupted global order.

During the meeting, Berkley also gave an update on the COVAX Facility and Gavi COVAX Advanced Market Commitment (AMC).

The COVAX facility and the Gavi Advance Market Commitment (AMC) are designed to ensure equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, as soon as they are ready in 2021.

Rwanda will benefit from this mechanism, with a focus on WHO-approved Covid vaccines that are both safe and effective, according to officials.

President Kagame launched the AMC at the Global Vaccine Summit in June 2020 and remains a champion of the effort.

Also part of the conference call was health minister, Dr Daniel Ngamije.
