Simple steps to turn an internship into a full time job
Tuesday, September 29, 2020

As an intern, finding your way around the workplace can be an exciting journey. And even though this form of placement is more of a way to gain experience in a specific career field, it can also be an opportunity for you to become a potential employee.

If landing a full time job is one of the objectives of your internship, there is need to be strategic. On top of setting your priorities, you need to do more than working hard to convince your employer that you can handle the responsibilities of a full time job.

Below are some of the ways to achieve this goal;

Make a good impression

It should be your priority to show your supervisor that you know what you want and have what it takes to fit in with the corporate culture. Make an effort to equip yourself with the knowledge beyond your responsibilities, for example learn about the company’s mission and vision. Make an effort to engage in other activities of the organisation too.

Make your intentions clear

Take initiative to communicate with your supervisor about the goals you have. If it’s a job post you desire, let them know that you are interested in being retained. This can be helpful; in case a job opening appears in the company, they can easily recommend you but this is only possible when they are aware that you are actually interested.

Take on more responsibility

During any internship, there is always a particular department one is assigned to. But for one who wants to achieve more than being an intern, it’s always good to be very active and not limit yourself in only one area. Check out different departments for any assignments you can take on. You can always first check with your supervisor to see if there is any additional work you can do. If not, then go ahead with assisting others in getting their work done. This will show how committed you are and can also equip you with various skills.

Network with other employees

One of the best ways to make a lasting impression is to network during your internship experience. Make an effort to know your co-workers, interact with them, share meals together and be polite and friendly with them. This will help you make friends, feel at ease at work and with your peers but also, it can be easy for the company to remember you when they are preparing to hire.

Show initiative

Most employers are interested in employees who take initiative when it comes to assuming responsibility or accomplishing tasks. Having this kind of skill shows a sense of maturity and self-discipline, and when an employer notices this, it is easier for them to consider hiring you for a permanent position in their company.

Note down goals and accomplishments

It’s important to list down your achievements during your period as an intern. Highlight your growth, be sure to indicate challenges too and set out your goals upfront for your career. This strategy can help you when approaching your supervisor for a discussion about a possible job offer.
