FEATURED: The 2020 Future Summit - Hosted by the Segal Family Foundation
Tuesday, September 29, 2020

On October 1st, 2020, Segal Family Foundation will be hosting its largest event of the year. The Future Summit is expected to bring together over 1,000 guests, panelists, and participants across continents. These will include but are not limited to African social entrepreneurs, innovators, philanthropists, and the media.

The 2020 Future Summit is a virtual space to gather a diverse global community of change leaders to deconstruct and reshape trends in Africa from all angles. This year the stakes are even higher. COVID-19 invites us to think about what is essential and what has been neglected—an opportunity to explore how we can use our various resources to support a vision for the continent that is locally-authored and globally relevant.

COVID-19 has hindered the ability of various organizations to host in-person gatherings where people convene, exchange, network, and inspire each other. Despite these challenges, we believe it is still important to create moments that inspire, spark imaginations, and celebrate the wealth of knowledge and impact on the continent to center our attention on the future we want.

The Future Summit will be hosted online. The one-day event includes plenary sessions to inspire and provoke, participatory sessions designed to engage and connect like-minded participants, virtual site visits that can’t be hosted in-person allowing people to forge partnerships, and networking to support building relationships among different global ecosystem players. The event will conclude with exquisite performances meant to energize and invigorate the attendees with the spirit of celebrating what African communities and social leaders have been able to achieve in an unprecedented year. The Future Summit is free and open to the public.

When asked about why this event is timely, Dedo Baranshamaje, Segal Family Foundation’s Director of Innovation said: "There are never enough opportunities to see, feel, and learn from these drivers of change. The Future Summit creates a space for deep, complex, and radical dialogues.”

In terms of who to expect, the Future Summit will be hosted by June Sarpong, a TV presenter and the BBC's first Director of Creative Diversity. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader—the 2006 Nobel Prize Winner for the founding of Grameen Bank. We will also hear remarks from Barry Segal, the founder of the Segal Family Foundation.
