As the World celebrates tourism in this unprecedented time, the Rwanda Chamber of Tourism reflects on rebuilding tourism in a safe environment as it is one of the sectors that has been hit the hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, tourism has contributed to the livelihoods of many in Rwanda and plays a significant role in rural development, increasing per capita income, and contributing to about 8% of all off-farm jobs in Rwanda.

On this World Tourism Day, the COVID-19 pandemic presents an opportunity to redesign the tourism and hospitality sector priorities in consideration of its contribution to the economy.

Rwanda has adopted domestic tourism as part of this year’s theme "Tourism and Rural Development” to provide opportunities for all cities and preserve cultural and natural heritage.

"As we join the rest of the World to celebrate this day, we commend the efforts and determination of men and women in the sector, our guests (the tourists), and partner institutions that are supporting the sector to thrive.”

The Rwanda Chamber of Tourism takes this opportunity to appreciate the Government of Rwanda for adopting exceptional measures against the spread of COVID-19 and hereby requests the general public to keep up the excellent practice's responsibility of adapting to the ‘new normal’ ways of doing business and observing safety measures.

The establishment of an Economic Recovery Fund as a business recovery stimulus with tourism as a priority sector; waiver of some taxes; and boosting domestic leisure and MICE tourism segments through various strategic promotions and facilitations have tremendously contributed to a gradual recovery of the Tourism Industry.
