Rwanda’s Covid-19 death toll rises to 11

The Ministry of Health on Thursday, August 20, announced the death of a 42-year-old Rwandan who succumbed to Covid-19, becoming the 11th since mid-March when the pandemic was first confirmed in the country.

"Condolences to the family of 42-year-old Rwandan who died,” reads a tweet by the Ministry.

This is the third Covid-19 demise to be recorded by the country in this week, noting that on Tuesday, two new Covid-19 deaths were registered.

According to the daily update on the pandemic, the country on Thursday reported 73 new Covid-19 cases and seven recoveries.

Of the new cases, 48 were detected in Kigali among people who worked in closed markets.

Also, 14 new cases were identified in Rusizi’s high-risk groups.

The remaining 11 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Rubavu District.

The results were obtained from 5,463 sample tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In total, the country has carried out 351,383 tests since mid-March.

So far, Rwanda’s toll of Covid-19 confirmed cases stands at 2,717 of whom 1,705 have already recovered.

Kigali is currently the leading hotspot of this pandemic in the country, followed by Rusizi district.

In a bid to control the state of Covid-19 in the city, Rwanda Biomedical Centre on this Thursday kicked-off the second drive-through Covid-19 street testing that seeks to reveal the prevalence of the pandemic in Kigali.

Mass testing exercises are also being done in some parts of the country where the pandemic is prevalent.
